I have always been intrigued by martial arts. After dabbling in some traditional forms as a young adult, I began boxing in 2000. In 2004 my boxing gym closed, and whilst looking for a new place to train I stumbled across BJJ. After being easily submitted by a much smaller opponent I felt inspired to learn more. Since then, I have lived, trained, and competed in Brazil, trained BJJ around the world (including Japan, Canada, Several US states, and Several South American countries), fought and won amateur MMA, and competed in over 25 BJJ tournaments, winning gold (15 total) at both state and national levels. I was awarded the rank of first-degree Black belt in 2022 and am still learning and evolving.
Other personal interests include philosophy, mental and physical health, movement and mobility, and spending time with my wife and two kids. I hope to see you on the mats
I’ve had a passion for the outdoors and fitness all my life. I found a passion for weight training when I was 17. In 2011 I discovered Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and immediately took to it. I was honoured to receive my Blue Belt in QLD before moving to WA. During the years I’ve won numerous BJJ Competitions in both Qld and WA. In 2013 I joined Base Mma Bunbury and it quickly became my second home. I was honoured to Earn my Black Belt in 2021.
I’m a qualified Boilermaker which is my Full-Time job and straight after work you’ll find me down at Base either participating in classes or teaching classes.
My wife Tam and I moved to WA in 2013 and have really made WA our home and made amazing friends that we are proud to call our family. In 2018 we bought into Base Mma Bunbury as part owners. When we aren’t at work or down at Base we enjoy relaxing at home in our Veggie garden or Camping and Fishing and always with our furbabies (German Shepherds) Thor and Pepper.

Stephen was awarded his Brown Belt in June 2021 and takes great pride and sees it as a privilege to have the opportunity to learn from and coach alongside some of the most experienced and talented coaches in the State daily. He is one of the head coaches of BASE MMA’s kids Jiujitsu program with program producing the #1 Kids Jiujitsu Competition TEAM in the State holding this title for the past 2 years.
We’ve been training martial arts since January 2015. We grew up in the Southwest and have been involved in several local sporting clubs before finding what has now become our passion and life BASE MMA.
In 2018 we bought into BASE MMA as owners/partners and have enjoyed the focus of building a Family friendly environment and have made lifelong friends along the way.
We have 3 children, Brodi, Jet and Laila. All 3 children have trained since they could walk and even at such young ages are already very accomplished competitors with all 3 holding multiple State Titles each.
We have travelled and trained in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia and are constantly looking to improve and gain as much knowledge as possible.
Outside of the ACADEMY, we both work in the Mining industry and in our time off will take every opportunity to get away outdoors with Family and Friends.
We are very grateful that they get to do what they love everyday with their closest friends as business partners and training partners. To them, this is not just a business, IT IS A LIFESTYLE.
Health and fitness have always been my passion from a young age. We always loved training in different sports, weight training, fitness comps and my number one is Muay Thai, which I competed in a few years ago. I’m a busy Mumma of 5 very active children who are my world. I love spending time with my Family, outdoors would be our favourite whether it’s in the Bush, at the beach or hanging with our family and friends
No matter what your fitness goals may be, come and see me
